Businesses need to know about this important technological change starting now and completing in less than four years. In 2025, BT will permanently switch off all public switched telephone network (PSTN) services. The PSTN consists of the telephone lines, cables, satellites, microwave transmission links, cellular networks and other hardware required to allow traditional analogue telephones to communicate with each other.

So what will replace it?

Consumers will make all phone calls over broadband using VoIP systems. You may well already be using this system. Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), also called IP telephony, allows voice communications over IP networks such as the internet. All voice calls will be internet-based and delivered via a fibre network.
